IRANIAN ACTIVISTS RECOGNIZED BY CZECH HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATION

Two Iranian student activists are recognized for their political struggles in Iran by the Czech NGO People in Need.

Abdollah Momeni and Majid Tavakoli are the recipients of this year’s Homo Homini Award, which recognizes “dedication to the promotion of human rights, democracy, and non-violent solutions to political conflicts.”

The award will be given tonight in the opening of the One World human rights film festival in Prague. “Green Days” a film portraying some of the post-election protests to the presidential elections which protesters claim was rigged in favour of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, will also open the festival.

Majid Tavakoli, a student activist, who was arrested after giving a speech at Amir Kabir University during the protests of December 7, National Student’s Day in Iran, is currently in prison and reportedly in solitary confinement.

His arrest sparked a wave of protests in the Iranian community when the authorities tried to mock him by publishing a picture of him in custody wearing women’s clothing. Iranian men began posting pictures of themselves in hijab (head covering) to express their solidarity with Tavakoli
